MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: Scherer Family
Genoa Township residents, Mike and Megan Scherer turned their personal experience of young adult cancer and infertility into a charity to help others in similar situations. Their newly launched nonprofit, Worth the Wait, provides grants to young adult cancer patients for fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment and infertility treatments, adoption and surrogacy post treatment. “We want all young adult cancer survivors to have the privilege of parenthood. Most insurance companies don’t provide coverage and Worth the Wait fills this unmet need,” said Mike, a testicular cancer survivor. They awarded their first grant in November to an Ohio couple adopting a baby girl.
